Dir. By Jeff Wedding

Victims: Katie Groshong, Starina Johnson, Stephen Jackson and Dale Rainey

Tonight I set down and gathered up everything I would need to settle in and watch a flick. Jeff Wedding was kind enough to send me a screener copy of his latest film A MEASURE OF THE SIN.I was very eager to see this, as I had done a little reading up on it yet I don’t believe anything could have prepared me for what was going to be burned into my eyes! A MEASURE OF THE SIN plays out like a sweet ass art house film nonchalantly fused with bizarro. Let me try to explain the best that I can. Enjoy.

A MEASURE OF THE SIN tells the tale of several women being held prisoner by a man and are only allowed to go outside if something needs to be done. He threatens them not to run, that he’ll always find a reason for them to go outside and enjoy the breeze. For Meredith that means an enchanted seclusion that is shattered when she is deprived of her mother. Desperate and alone, Meredith must join a household, not much unlike that of a Jim Jones or Manson type situation with other women and their children, a sinister man who controls every facet of her existence, and oddly enough there’s even a vicious bear that only she can see, a bear!!. As life in this world becomes increasingly strange and frightening, Meredith realizes that she must flee, even though she fears she has not learned enough to survive on her own.

A MEASURE OF A SIN is beautifully shot on 16mm film and it shows. This bad boys sound and cinematography is superb and spot on in every aspect. This is just a phenomenal film on so many untold levels. There are so many things I could point out that are right about this film but that would take forever and what would be the point in watching it then? Now this isn’t your average film. It does touch on some basis that I’m sure will offend some and It does have some of the weirdest shit I’ve ever seen in a movie…But it’s been YEARS since I’ve watched such an excellently fun trippy flick. Last time I watched a movie that tripped me out this bad was Salo. Like I stated the absurdity in this film ranges from the aforementioned bear, you have the girls dancing nude and shaving each other, as well as bathing and grooming each other like a pack of cubs. I’ve been into horror films for I don’t know how long now, and albeit this isn’t really a horror film but more of a hard drama director Wedding manages to mix genres that usually wouldn’t work well…an art house AND bizarre. Bravo Mr. Wedding. You and producer Mrs. Groshong have a nice little gem you’re sitting on.

To round it out I also feel this film works so well due to the dedication set forth by the actresses. Katie Groshong, Starina Johnson and Dale Rainey as well as Stephen Jackson nailed their roles and make you get into their heads almost where you can see what they do.  I highly recommend this film if you call yourself a film fanatic….there’s not one thing wrong with this film. It’s brilliant in every way!
