The Devil's Carnival, the "Saw" director's thematic follow-up to his cult classic musical horror movie Repo The Genetic Opera, is visually and musically stunning. Tortured souls in life die only to be thrown into the afterworld of a morbid, satanic freak show trickery full of Gothic tunes.Sean Patrick Flanery is great as John, a man who falls victim to suicide and ends up in a side-show Hell, doomed to try finding his missing son, but the child keeps morphing into broken dolls and demon midgets each time he thinks he has finally found the boy. Do I like this as much as Repo? No, however, that being said, for only 60 minutes, I felt fulfilled, but at the same time, I do wish it had continued a bit more. Just as you think the film is over it finishes during the credits, I almost missed this! So viewers, keep your eyes peeled long after the final scene. As for the songs, a few were good, but not great. I liked "Off to Hell We Go †" and "666" .. This film is pretty straight forward, not as abstract as most Musical Horror. It begins with the deaths of the three main individuals, John, Ms. Merrywood, and Tamara. Then goes straight to what I perceive as their own fun-house Hell. It lacked dialog, even in the music, but made up for it in the striking, intense, red and eerie cinematography. Three and a half out of 5 stars.
