Dir. James Cullen Bressack

 

Filmed in yet another of those 'found footage" style fims a Jewish family, that just arrived in a new neighborhood, are recording their youngest son's birthday celebrations on video when their home is suddenly invaded by a bunch of Neo-Nazi lunatics hopped up on meth each labeled #1, #2 and #3 .

 

Wasting no time getting to the drama and utter brutality James Cullen Bressack definitely shows us he knows a thing or two about some horrorific things. There have been several Nazis terrororizing Jews films floating around, most notably PHILOSOPHY OF A KNIFE, so the brutalness of films such as these take a lot to work.While the film is brutal and direct that's the point, it's an hour an a half-ish of constant stress being shoved down the viewers throat with zero time to come up for air.Is that good or bad? That all depends on the type of film you're wanting to view. And Going in knowing nothing of this film one could easily argue that HATE CRIME running at only an hour and 20 minutes it doesn't have any time to grow any structural balance. Yet if you know what you're going into then maybe this works perfectly for you.

 

 I don't feel as if the acting was bad as some viewers have claimed, Bressack does manage to get all he can from them. I felt they did a good job but my problem is due to the constant depraivity there were several times that I was unsure that I knew what was going on. I will say that it was brutal and fairly disturbing but for me, and generally it takes more then that to entertain me. I've seen the shock movies, per se and this one just sort of goes a tad further then a lot.

 

From seeing some of his other works and knowing what he's capable of , maybe given more time to draw this out it may have worked out better. Once again I'm not stating that I didn't like this. I'm just not sure how to react to what I just witnessed. There will be another viewing of this in the near future. But for what this is one viewing isn't enough for me. I'll be watching this one again.
